Cyclocopter
Our Research
This project began with comprehensive research into cycloidal propulsion systems and their unique ability to generate omnidirectional thrust through rotating airfoils. Unlike traditional propeller based drones, this cyclocopter utilizes airfoils that can change in direction, allowing for instantaneous thrust vectoring without reorienting the entire vehicle.
Our research revealed that airfoil selection and pitch control are critical to optimizing thrust generation in specific directions. To validate theoretical findings, I optimized existing airfoil shapes into a design that fit our fuselage, and tested these on a test stand with a load cell system for precise force measurements. The iterative process of researching cycloidal mechanics and selecting optimal airfoils formed the foundation for optimizing the cyclocopter’s directional thrust capabilities.
